Denim Sample Cost and Development Process
Denim sample cost depends on the product brief, fabric direction, wash development, construction, trims and the number of sample stages required. A simple style using available materials is different from a highly customised jean requiring special fabric sourcing, detailed wash effects, branded hardware or complex construction.

What affects the cost of a denim sample?
A useful sample quotation must be based on the actual development requirements. The garment category alone is not enough to determine the work involved.

The main cost factors normally include:
- Product category and pattern complexity
- Whether a usable tech pack or existing sample is available
- Fabric composition, weight, stretch and sourcing requirements
- Fabric supplier MOQ
- Wash shade, abrasion, fading and surface effects
- Construction, seams, pockets and stitching details
- Custom buttons, rivets, zippers, labels and patches
- Trim supplier MOQ and tooling requirements
- Artwork, embroidery, laser or other decorative details
- Required sample stage and number of sample pieces
- Packaging requirements and delivery destination
A reference image helps communicate the visual direction, but it does not always show the fabric structure, finished measurements, internal construction or trim specifications. Written details are therefore needed before a reliable sampling plan can be prepared.
Why is there no single fixed sample price?
Two jeans that appear similar in a photograph may require very different development work.
One may use an available denim, standard hardware and a straightforward wash direction. Another may require specially sourced fabric, a new pattern, several wash trials, custom hardware and detailed fit corrections.
Quoting one standard price before reviewing these requirements could give the buyer an inaccurate expectation. The product brief should therefore be reviewed before the appropriate sampling route and quotation are confirmed.

Is sample cost the same as the bulk unit cost?
No. Sample cost and bulk production unit cost represent different stages of the project.
Sample development may include pattern work, one-off material sourcing, wash trials, custom trim preparation, manual adjustments and repeated review that are not calculated in the same way as a bulk production unit price.
Bulk unit cost depends on the final approved fabric, wash, construction, trims, packaging and production quantity.
For this reason, a sample quotation should not automatically be treated as a direct indication of the eventual per-piece bulk price.
When can a more accurate bulk unit price be confirmed?
A more reliable bulk quotation can usually be prepared once the main production requirements are sufficiently clear.
Important information includes:
- Final or selected denim fabric
- Fabric sourcing MOQ
- Approved wash direction
- Garment construction
- Buttons, rivets, zippers and other trims
- Branding and packaging
- Production quantity and size range
If major product details remain open, the bulk price may still need to be treated as an estimate rather than a final production quotation.
Can fabric MOQ affect sample and production cost?
Yes. The garment MOQ and fabric supplier MOQ are not always the same.
A specific denim construction, imported fabric, special colour or specialised stretch fabric may have a supplier minimum that is higher than the fabric required for an initial 100–300 pcs garment order.
This can affect both the sourcing route and the commercial practicality of using that exact fabric for the first production run.
If the preferred fabric MOQ is not suitable, a close alternative can be reviewed against the intended weight, composition, handfeel, stretch, recovery and wash performance.

Can custom trim MOQ affect the quotation?
Yes. Custom buttons, rivets, zipper pullers, labels, patches and other branded trims can have their own supplier minimums, tooling charges or setup requirements.
A low garment quantity does not automatically mean every custom component can be produced at the same quantity.

What are the main stages of denim sample development?
1. Product brief review
The first stage is to review the reference image, sketch, existing garment or tech pack together with the intended fit, fabric, wash, trims, size range, quantity and timeline.
Missing or contradictory information should be clarified before the physical sample begins.
2. Fabric and trim direction
Fabric direction should support the intended silhouette, comfort and wash effect. Weight, composition, structure, stretch and recovery should be considered together.
Buttons, rivets, zippers, labels, patches and packaging should also be identified early when they affect construction, sourcing or preparation.
3. Pattern and construction development
The pattern is developed around the intended wearing position and silhouette. Construction details such as the waistband, pockets, fly, seams, stitching and reinforcement should match the approved product brief.
4. Wash development
Wash development can change colour, contrast, softness, shrinkage, surface character and finished garment measurements.
The wash brief should identify the intended shade, fading placement, abrasion, whiskers, handfeel and visible effects.

5. Fit and measurement review
The physical sample should be reviewed for silhouette, wearing position, comfort, movement, construction and finished measurements.
Comments should refer to the exact sample version, size and date.

6. Revised sample or approval
If material changes are required, a revised sample may be needed.
Once the relevant fit, fabric, wash, construction, measurements and trims are approved, the confirmed sample can provide a physical reference for the next production stage.
When can a revised sample create additional cost?
A revised sample may require additional work when the requested changes go beyond correcting the original approved development direction.
Examples can include:
- Changing to a materially different fabric
- Changing the silhouette or major pattern proportions
- Developing a new wash direction
- Adding new custom hardware or trims
- Changing major construction details
- Requesting additional physical sample versions
Whether an additional sample charge applies should be confirmed in the project quotation rather than assumed from a general website statement.
How long does denim sampling take?
Sample development normally takes around 30 days after the tech pack or development specifications, fabric, trims and sample requirements are confirmed.
This period does not begin from the first general enquiry if important product information or development materials are still missing.
Specially sourced fabric, custom trims, complex construction or detailed wash development may require preparation before sampling can begin.
How can a brand reduce unnecessary sample revisions?
The objective is not to remove every development decision before the first sample. It is to make the starting direction clear enough that the sample answers useful questions.
Brands can reduce avoidable revisions by:
- Using one current and clearly identified tech pack
- Providing measurable fit requirements rather than visual descriptions alone
- Separating essential requirements from optional preferences
- Confirming the intended fabric feel and wash direction
- Providing trim artwork, dimensions and placement information
- Consolidating fit and appearance comments into one review
- Identifying the sample version, size and date in every comment round
What changes after sample approval can affect the bulk quotation?
A production quotation may need to be revised if the approved product changes materially.
Examples include:
- Changing fabric or fabric supplier
- Changing the wash process
- Adding or changing custom trims
- Changing garment construction
- Changing packaging requirements
- Changing the production quantity
The final production price should therefore correspond to the final approved production specification.

Can I receive a sample quotation from a reference image?
A reference image can begin the review, but additional information may be required. Please include the intended product category, fit, fabric, wash, construction, trims, size range, quantity and delivery destination.

Yes. Custom hardware, labels, patches and other trims may have separate supplier minimums or tooling requirements.
Can a revised sample require an additional payment?
It can, depending on the changes requested and the agreed quotation. Additional requirements should be confirmed before the revised sample begins.
Is the sample payment included in the production order?
Payment terms should be confirmed in the project quotation before development begins. They should not be assumed from a general website description.
Does one sample include every colour and wash?
Not necessarily. Different colours, washes or materially different fabrics may require separate physical review.
What is TANTYDENIM’s production MOQ?
MOQ starts from 100 pcs per style, wash and colour, with mixed sizes accepted. Final requirements can depend on fabric availability, wash, trims and construction.
