What information should be confirmed before sampling?

Clear information at the beginning reduces avoidable revisions later. Before sampling, a startup brand should define as much of the following as possible:

• Product category and intended customer
• Reference image, sketch, existing garment or tech pack
• Intended fit, rise and wearing position
• Fabric composition, weight, structure and stretch direction
• Target wash, shade, contrast and surface effects
• Construction, pockets, seams and stitching details
• Buttons, rivets, zippers, labels, patches and branding
• Target size range and grading direction
• Quantity per style, wash and colour
• Packaging requirements and required timeline

Missing information does not always prevent an initial discussion, but it can affect fabric sourcing, trim preparation, pattern development and the point at which the sample timeline can begin.

How does the 100-piece MOQ work for a startup brand?

TANTYDENIM’s MOQ starts from 100 pcs per style, wash and colour, with mixed sizes accepted. The workable order plan is reviewed after the fabric, wash, trims, size range and construction requirements are clear.

The garment MOQ and the fabric or trim MOQ are not always the same. A specific denim fabric, custom hardware or specialised trim may have its own supplier minimum. This can affect whether a particular material is practical for an initial 100–300 pcs production run.

For a first production run, concentrating the quantity on one strong style and one clearly approved wash can make sourcing, development and approval easier to control.

What affects the cost of a first denim production run?

The unit cost of custom denim is influenced by more than the garment silhouette. Important factors include the denim fabric, fabric sourcing MOQ, wash complexity, construction, custom trims, branding, packaging and production quantity.

A first collection using an available fabric and standard trims will have a different cost structure from a style requiring specialised denim, custom hardware, additional waistband construction or a complex wash.

For this reason, a more accurate production estimate is usually prepared after the product brief and development requirements have been reviewed.

How should fabric and wash direction be selected?

Fabric should be selected around the intended silhouette and wearing experience. Composition alone does not fully explain how the finished jean will feel or perform. Weight, structure, stretch direction, extension, recovery, wash treatment and garment construction should be reviewed together.

The wash direction should identify more than a colour name. The brief should communicate the intended base shade, contrast, fading placement, abrasion, whiskers, handfeel and visible surface effects.

A physical approved wash sample provides a more dependable bulk reference than an image viewed under different lighting or screen conditions.

How are fit samples and size sets approved?

A fit sample is used to review the intended silhouette, wearing position, construction, comfort and finished garment measurements.

For jeans, the waistband, rise, hip, thigh, knee, inseam and leg opening should work together rather than being approved as isolated measurements.

After the base size is approved, a size set can be used to review whether the grading works consistently across selected smaller and larger sizes.

Can a startup brand customise trims and packaging?

Yes. Private-label development can include custom buttons, rivets, zippers, labels, patches, selected trims and packaging.

The required artwork, dimensions, placement, finish and attachment method should be defined clearly before approval. Hardware finish, button size, rivet placement, label material, patch construction and packaging requirements can all affect preparation and sample review.

What are common mistakes in a first denim production run?

Many first-production problems come from approving individual details without checking how they work together in the finished garment.

Common areas that need attention include:

• Changing fabric after the fit has already been approved
• Approving wash colour without checking final measurements and handfeel
• Adding custom trims too late in the development process
• Starting grading before the base-size fit is approved
• Using visual references without written measurement or construction guidance
• Assuming garment MOQ automatically matches fabric or trim supplier MOQ
